STATION PROFILE
KTLR was started in the fall of 1998 by Jay Mitchell, a Vines
High School freshman. Already having prior experience in radio,
as well as a job as an evening 4p-7p producer and on-air
personality at local Americana station KHYI, he decided to try running his own station in his spare
time. Already owning a transmitter, and 150+ CD's, he started in
August of 1998. Everyday (almost), after he got off work, he
would come home, fire up the transmitter and spin tunes until
midnight or so, later on the weekends. Some days, he had too much
going on for school, he did not have time to do KTLR, so a new
solution had to be devised. WinAmp was downloaded, and a large amount of songs were
digitized as MP3's (CD quality, people!!!), as well as a lot of
the station's WAV files. "I needed it so that I could load a
playlist of songs, in case I needed to concentrate on something
else for an extended period of time," said Jay. Another
problem was lack of staffing. Jay was the only one running KTLR,
and we kind of needed more on air staff. Another problem was the
station was ran through the computer, including the CD players,
microphone, tape players, everything, before being fed to the
transmitter. That meant if the computer froze up, there would be
dead air until Windows was restarted. Also, they were off the air
for a period of 3-4 weeks, due to a Windows 95 problem. That has
now all been rectified by the installation of a new solid state
Radio Shack mixing console, and piping the digital playback being
run through the mixer. Also, we have 3 full time members on staff
now. We are now ONE YEAR old. Also, we have the unique distinction of being the
only radio station in Collin county of being Y2K ready.
